10 December 2017. Don Khon to Don Khong

I took a few last pictures of the Pomelo Guesthouse


and got the better priced though still expensive 50,000 kip tuk tuk back into the ‘main’ town. I had been repeatedly assured that I’d be able to take a boat to Don Khong for a further 50,000, I must admit, I was not entirely surprised to be greeted by the local fixer, who said that sadly the boat did not exist today but I could have a private boat for 300,000.


Feeling somewhat conned, I declined the offer and got a boat to Nakasong
followed by a tuk tuk that at least took me to the entrance to where I was staying in Don Khong. This was all a pity and my memory of Don Khon – which is a lovely place – will be tainted by the mob running the transport for tourists there.

Don Khong did not create the most favourable of impressions either. It was recovering from a huge party the night before and was covered in plastic littler. No turn the tide on plastic here, unfortunately!

However, where I was staying at the Megong Inn, the views of the river were really lovely

The National Gallery of Singapore was on the verge of opening last time I was here two years ago. It is an amazing triumph, fusing the old Supreme Court sand City Hall. The Supreme Court has three floors of galleries devoted to South East Asian Art. The City Hall houses temporary exhibitions as well as the Galleries of Singapore Art. Frankly is was more than a day's worth of viewing. Quite apart from the art in the galleries, there is the architecture of the building(s) and the views from the decks at the top. I started with the South East Asia galleries. This is a chronological exhibition, starting from the early nineteenth century. 25 December 2017. Artless in Kowloon

So, I had arrived at my last day. Having checked in my bag at Central, I took the Star Ferry to Kowloon, planning to spend a couple of hours in the art gallery. It is part of a 'South Bank' type complex and first of all I visited the concert hall. This had an exhibition of art by students that was a mix of calligraphy and figurative work. That proved to be almost it on the art front. The gallery had closed not long after my last visit - in August 2015 and was due to open early in 2019. It struck me as a bit like closing both the National Gallery and Tate for four years. But there we are! Outside there were a couple of interesting sculptures and so they had to suffice for my artistic input. 24 December 2017. Trip to the New Territories - Sai Kung and Wong Shek

I'd never been to the New Territories in my previous vists and decided on a journey that was described as scenic. I'm so glad I did so. It was a beautiful day with a clear blue sky and I headed for Admiralty to do the first leg of my journey. On the way to the station I came across a Democracy Demonstration that seemed well humoured on the part of the demonstrators and the police. The MTR took me to Diamond Hill. From there, I took the 92 to Sai Kung. This was itself a very pleasant 30 minute ride past a large marina, as well as a prison run by the Correctional Service. At Sai Kung, I switched to the 94 to Wong Shek. I seemed to be about the only person on the bus without an enormous backpack and hiking sticks.
